Jōhatsu tells a story about the price of freedom, the unconditional love between a mother and daughter, and the heartbreaking dilemma that arises when the two collide. Mana grows up in an isolated community where tradition and devotion shape the cycle of life. Yet within her lives an insatiable longing for the forbidden world beyond the forest. When she is confronted with the consequences of disobedience, she begins to question the tribe’s strict rules more deeply than ever before. Her approaching rite of passage from girlhood to womanhood marks a turning point. While her mother, Kami, urges her to remain true to her roots, Mana’s desire to break free only grows stronger. She realizes that tomorrow will be too late. She chooses to escape, knowing that freedom does not come without sacrifice. Jōhatsu ends suspended between hope and melancholy: the cycle is broken, but not without leaving scars. It is an intimate exploration of tradition, individuality, and the courage it takes to break away from what, and whom, you love most.
